A Few of My Favourite Things: 2012

A little later than normal, as the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 was spent recovering from a wicked cold, but below, as always, some of my favourite things from the past year. Books, television, movies, music…it’s all here.

IMG_1001 I continue to watch fewer and fewer movies every year, and this year I didn’t read as much as a normally do. I could say that this decline is proportional to an increase in time spent on my iPhone, but I don’t think that’s the full story. I watched a lot more television this year, and the high level of quality, original programming there meant I didn’t need to go to a theatre to see the latest poorly-concieved remake. As for the reading, my habit always ebbs and flows, and this year it mostly ebbed. I don’t expect that to last, and I also imagine I’m still reading a great deal more than most people. At least this is what I tell myself, so that I don’t get too upset when I realize how far behind I am on my reading list.

As for music, I think 2012 was a better year for singles than complete albums. There weren’t many records that I loved all the way through. Of the ones I’ve listed below, I’m only sure that I liked The Lumineers album the best. The others move up and down, in and out, on a daily basis. There were a lot of great songs, however, and that is reflected in the length of my “Best Of” mix. Of all the culture I consume, music remains the most consistent. I may watch fewer movies, or go through stages where I’m not reading any books, but I never stop needing a good song to get me through my day.
