Baseball Haiku

in the town of beer and deer
milwaukee’s Fielder

a sad lexicon
Tinkers to Evers to Chance
ball game is over

Satch loads the bases
strikes out the Black Babe Ruth

flip over the pack
bubblegum powder attacks
hear the cards snap

bare feet on the grass
toes wrapping around cold green
Shoeless hunts the ball

his last time at bat—
ball soars over the Monster
spendid splintering Ted

swing and a crack
ball lopes across blue sky
racing to catch its fall

ankle bleeds—
enemies swipe at the ball
red sock triumphant

Three Finger Brown
Cool Papa Bell—
names of summer

hear the crack of the bat—
glove over the face
inhale leather and spring

train gallops across the plains—
poker, jokers and scotch
summer flickers in the window

silent crowd—
eyes watching it all with fear
darkness steps onto the field
